Dear colleagues,

An international symposium held in Zagreb in October, 2006, marked the beginning of a new era in endemic nephropathy research when scientists and physicians from Europe and the United States described cutting-edge investigations into the causes of this disease.[J. Am Soc. Nephrol 18:2817 (2007)] As a result of this conference, collaborative research was established among endemic nephropathy centers in Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia and we hope that our colleagues in Bulgaria and Romania will soon be included.
During the Zagreb symposium and at a subsequent meeting in Belgrade, many Directors of endemic centers pointed to a need to reevaluate the currently used diagnostic criteria for endemic nephropathy. In addition, as recent research has highlighted aristolochic acid as a major risk factor in endemic nephropathy, public health officials believed it was important to assess potential interventions that might be undertaken to eradicate Aristolochia clematitis from wheat fields and to educate the exposed population to the potential dangers of this toxic weed.
To address these important considerations, scientists and physicians from the countries harboring endemic nephropathy have decided to join together to develop universal criteria and guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of endemic nephropathy and its associated upper urothelial cancers. It is immensely gratifying that our colleagues from other European countries and the United States have agreed to participate in this important initiative.

Thus, we will convene a symposium to be organized as a satellite symposium of the Fifth Croatian Congress on Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation. Reflecting the importance of this meeting, the World Health Organization has agreed to sponsor this important event, as it had done more than 30 years ago for meetings in Dubrovnik, Croatia and Lazarevac, Serbia.
A preliminary program is included with this first announcement. Further details will be forthcoming soon. The final program will be available on the website of the Croatian Society for Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation and at the website www.endemic-nephropathy.mef.hr.

We hope that you will attend this symposium, participate in this important project, and enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic sea and the magical island of Brač.
